Angry (female) commuter rail workers

I've taken the commuter rail from Providence to Back Bay several times in the past few weeks for internship interviews, and one thing constant with my trips are that the commuter rail workers, espeically female, are super angry and pissed off at everything! On the train to Boston yesterday afternoon, one of the women stormed up and down the aisle of my train car, telling people to take their luggage off the seat and store it somewhere else on the train. When someone asked where, she replied "i don't know. find space." Really helpful. So when it came to purchasing my ticket, she told me that I should have paid in the station (aka, waiting in the long line with everyone buying their Amtrak tickets) and then said "You better be ready to move that luggage if people come in, because every seat will be taken on this train, best believe." Thankfully, I had taken this exact same train last Friday and my cab was half-full, which I pointed out to her. She gave me my change back and then announced over the intercom "EVERYONE MUST MOVE THEIR LUGGAGE OFF THEIR SEAT NOW." My luggage wasn't even on the seat, it was on the ground between my seat and the seat in front of me. And the train ended up not being full, not even CLOSE to it.

Several weeks ago, another annoyed worker told off two boys who got on at Route 128 and didn't pay or didn't have the money to pay -- understandable. They pulled out a deck of cards after they were told by the worker that they needed to get off at the next stop (Back Bay) and they complied. They began paying cards, and the woman took all their cards and said "You can't play that here." They were not gambling, so it was kind of weird. I don't know if they got off at Back Bay or not, but they were also threatened by the woman that the police would be there waiting for them -- because one of the other female workers heard them call her a bitch after she left. Understandable, but the entire cab could hear the discussions between the parties -- even with my ipod on.

Conclusion: Everyone working on the commuter rail just needs to relax a little bit. Maybe tensions are just running high lately.

edit @ 11:06: I am thankful for the commuter rail workers for doing their job, but I wish they had a little more respect for people traveling with suitcases. On the double decker trains, there is not enough room on the ceiling rack for a regular sized suitcase to sit without fear of it falling on your head, and the width is also too small for a suitcase to fit. Please let us travelers use whatever space we can to ideally fit both our luggage and ourselves in the seats. And I'm pleased to report that my trip to Boston yesterday and trip back today will not have to occur again for another month or two -- I'll be moving back to Boston for school on Monday.

I take the Framingham line and there is one female conductor who seems perpetually unhappy. She doesn't get as worked up about luggage and playing cards and such, but she rarely smiles. I'm not sure why that is.

By the way, I'm a RI native (Pawtucket) and NU grad. Good luck!

There are nice conductors, too. On the 3:45 train to Providence, the conductor at the front of the train is incredible. Happy, stops to chat with the regulars, even announced someone's birthday! It's a pleasure to ride with him.

There are conductors of all temperments, but I had an experience with an aggressive conductor on my way to Natick a couple years ago. I innocently touched her on the shoulder, and she FREAKED out.

Not only did she yell at me when it happened, she continued to bawl me out almost every time she passed by. A 2-second episode turned into 30 minutes of hell...
